Thought for Thursday - Lifelong Learning

I want to be a continuous learner, to study a foreign language, learn a new craft, question, and always ask What if?

Leonardo was a continuous learner, "Just as iron rusts from disuse, and stagnant water putrefies, or when cold turns to ice, so our intellect wastes unless it is kept in use."

I don't want to let my brain rust or my thoughts putrefy.

One way to be a lifelong learner is to sharpen your question-asking skills. Leonardo believed in asking the simple questions that educated people might overlook.

He wrote, "I ask . . . Why is the sky blue?"

We should all follow in DaVinci's footsteps by keeping little notepads where we ask What? When? Why? How? and Where?

And one EZ way to keep learning is to acquire a new hobby. I'm making a list of hobbies and going to ask myself:

1) How much time can I devote to this?
2) What resources will it take?
3) What is my ultimate goal?
4) How will I benefit from this hobby?
5) What might get in the way?
6) Who do I know who can teach me, mentor me, help me?

QUESTION AND THOUGHT FOR YOU: What hobbies might you want to take up? (Please add them to the comments section)

Great post! The hobbies I want to take up are ones I haven't done in a long, long time. I used to love doing paint-by-number oil painting kits, latch-hooking, and bike riding. I'd like to get back into those soon. Oh ...

With three kids, my hobbies have been pushed to the side. I scrapbooked for a while, played sports til my early twenties. But now I barely have time to write (or read for fun)....
I do make time for exercise, is that a hobby?
But I love spending time with my kids so I'll make that my hobby! :)

I've been into hobbies a long time. My main hobby is tatting. I would like to do more drawing, more playing of the guitar. I'd also like to make more doll clothes...

I love quilting, but haven't done that in years...I love doing crafts with rubber stamps, but only slap together a card here and there when we need one...I haven't cross-stitched in forever and would love to find the time to do that also...sigh...maybe one of these days...

Great post!

Miss Kim, I wish you were able to go to my Spanish II class with me. I'm taking a web design class in the spring too. We need a jet! LOL

I'm always trying to learn new languages. I've learned Spanish and Chinese in school, and the little bit of French I just learned for our recent Paris trip makes me yearn to take in more of that particular language.

If I had my way (i.e., time), I would take up Arabic and Italian next. Not at the same time, tho. :)

Those are great questions--I'd love to take up drawing again and try painting, but right now is really not the time with so many demands on my days. Still, it's something to look forward to as the kids become more independent and the house repairs get done.

The hobby I *should* take up is some kind of exercise like running or tennis or something. Oh bleeeuuugh... LOL
