Well, being convoluted has to do with being twisted, twining, being complicated. I can just here some old cranky granpa saying to his lying grandson, "Don't you get convolutin' with me!"

yes it means twist but it also means overlapping like the rose petals or ivy that covers the side of a house or really gross snakes in a pit.
