THOUGHT FOR THURSDAY

It seems like just the other day I was cooped up in my house, snowbound and enjoying the holidays. But I look up on the wall calendar and see the month is already more than half over.

At work, they handed out our W-2's. It made me think about one of the two certainties in life: Death and Taxes.

Well, at least the second part of those two certain things: the taxes part.

QUESTION: Do you know how many countries don't require their citizens to pay taxes?

And, can you name it/them?

I don't know much but since we went to a job fair that listed how much we'd be taxed in other countries, I have learned some things.

I do know it's very expensive to live in a socialist country like Finland or Norway. You're taxed 55-60% of all your earnings.

Here in Korea we are taxed but we get all the taxes back because of an agreement between the US and Korean governments. Of course, it's very expensive to live in Korea. Gas, food and housing are outrageous. I go back home and love what Americans call high gas and good prices.

In Indonesia we were taxed too, but then most of the country lives in poverty so I think they mainly target the rich. Food and gas is dirt cheap there.

One thing I do know, we've got it good in the US. I've visited all over the world and have yet to see houses, roads, food quality, gas prices or medicine up to par with the US. Maybe I'm bias but I don't think Americans realize how great they've got it. How truly blessed.

Such a place exists, Kim? :)

I have no idea which country (or countries) could get by without taxation. Maybe Vatican City? Micronesia? I dunno.

Good question, tho! Can't wait to see the answer.

I'll bite. I know this isn't a complete listing but: United Arab Emirates, Isle of Wight off of England, Lebanon, Monaco, British Virgin Islands, Dubai.

Christina: I know. My husband's family lives in Denmark - very high taxes. But still, it would be nice to not have any.

Thanks for playing along my brave blogging buddies. :)

I wouldn't even know where to guess.

I had no idea there were such places. I guess I really bought the saying about death and taxes.

Yeah Meredith I don't think the U.S. had income taxes until about 100 years ago - only import taxes but I'll have to do a little more research to be sure.
