Coraline - A Seriously Creepy Kids' Book

Coraline is one creepy kids’ book. And, I loved it.

Coraline’s life is sorta boring at least in her mind. She wants to be an explorer and have exciting things to do. Well, we’ve all heard the expression, “Be careful what you wish for – it just might come true.” And boy does it ever come true for Coraline.

There is a door in the drawing room that is “only for best”. Right away you know something’s wrong with a room that is “only for best”, ‘cause who calls something that any way? The words aren’t even right.

There’s a door in there that’s always kept locked. And, when Coraline asks her mother, “Where does that door go?”

She says, “Nowhere, dear.”

“It has to go somewhere.” Coraline doesn’t believe her but her mother proves her point.

The door swings open and it opens onto a brick wall – but that doesn’t last for long.

Later, Coraline goes back to the odd door and this time it opens into another house just like her own…except when you look a little closer, it isn’t.

She has another mother and another father but they aren’t the look-alikes they appear to be. Instead the other mother turns out to be…

Well, I don’t want to ruin the story for all you readers out there.

Suffice it to say that Coraline must use her brain to win this game, and a little trickery too – along with the help of a not-so-friendly cat.

This 163 page novel is a fun read and now there’s a 3-D stop-motion animated picture – that is currently on my “To-Do” list.

I read this book several years ago and thought "What a strange book!" Now with the movie coming out, I think I might re-read it. Neil Gaimon has such a weird, twisted, interesting mind...

Seriously, I loved this book - and yeah it was so totally creepy that I hesitate to give it to my Oldest as I fear she will be scared. But I loved it!

Ditto - I loved this book too. It's actually my favourite book by Gaiman. Have you read the picture book, 'The Wolves in the Walls'? That seems like such a strange question to ask an adult. LOL! It is equally as creepy and equally as brilliant.

I didn't realize this was a book when I saw the movie trailer (I should have known!). My kids will like this book. I'm going to see if my library has it. Thanks Kim!

Ooohhh--I love the cover--I bet I'd adore it. "Dark" children's fiction is a favorite of mine.

Sounds creepy. Just the way Gaimon likes this to be. :)

Beth: It might be worth a re-read.

Ello: Two of my kids could handle these kinds of stories when they were younger - one couldn't even handle Ernest Scared Stupid - seriously.

Catherine: I've never even heard of The Wolves in the Walls - now I'm going to look for it.

Kelly: Me and my fam will go see it. My boys love to do animation. They have their own web-comic.

GG and Rena: It's creepy and dark - the way I like 'em.

My book club just decided on American Gods by Gaiman.

I've got to add this to my list before my girls insist we see the 3-D action-packed movie!

My children and I saw the trailer for the movie when we saw Despereaux. It freaked them out! I think we'll pass on that one.

Creepy - yes! I had to put it down for a few days then come back to it. It gave me the willies - but I loved it!

sruble: I thought it was a creepy-kewl poster.

Cindy: You are sooo lucky, did you meet him at a book signing?

Christina: It is creepy for kids.

Stacy: I think a 3-D movie will be fun. I haven't seen one since I was in Disneyland.

Nora and Amy: I don't blame you - not everyone likes the willies.
