THOUGHT FOR THURSDAY

This one is for all you writers working in the historical fiction area/genre:

QUESTION:
In Elizabethan times, why did dockworkers have to have their pockets sewn shut while ships were being unloaded from the Orient?

Come back tomorrow and find out if you were right. ;-)

So they couldn't pilfer, would be my guess. And since the ships are from the Orient, would that be pilfer opium?

I'm guessing so they wouldn't pocket the goods. Or stand around with their hands in their pockets instead of working:0

What they said?

I agree so they wouldn't steal anything.

Pilfering would be my guess too. And if not opium than maybe spices (some of which were worth a lot of money at the time) or jade.

I agree...so pilfering couldn't happen...but not sure what they would pilfer...if not opium...unless what Bish said...spices...

Good question!

I am guessing the same as the others here.

I agree. It was to keep them from stealing.

Pilfering is my first thought.
