THOUGHT FOR THURSDAY - A Question of Etiquette

QUESTION: What does R.S.V.P. mean? And, if it is written on an invitation, are you supposed to respond even if you aren't coming to the event?

I guess you got two questions - for the price of one - and FREE is a very good price.

"Repondez s'il vous plait"--French for, "Please Respond."

And yes, you should respond yes or no.

(I got the answer from my 5-year-old and her Fancy Nancy book for crying out loud! Does that mean I can't make fun of them anymore?)

I agree with Teacherninja--let them know either way.

Ooh, I knew this one, but I'm sure glad Teacherninja spelled it first! It's been too many years since I took French.

Hi Kim! I'm an etiquette nut. It's a curse I inherited from my grandmother. Anytime an invitation contains an RSVP, you need to reply. However, most people completely overlook this little courtesy. It's very frustrating for the host, who is trying to plan the menu when folks don't reply. My mother-in-love and I were discussing this topic the other day. She threw a huge trick or treat party, and no one RSVP'd. She invited 60, and 25 showed up.

This one seems to be a touchy subject - four comments before 7:00 a.m.

Had no idea what it "spelled", and still aren't sure since it is French, but I did know that you were to let them know either way...

I always thought it meant:

Responding
So
Very
Pleased

You know...they are pleased that you are responding...sigh...

Repondez s'il vous plait
I also knew that from reading my daughter's Fancy Nancy book!

I knew it was French, but I had no idea and would have had to look it up. ;)
