One person might sigh as they walk into the house to the scent of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. Another person might close their eyes and unwind while listening to the rolling sounds of the ocean waves. Still, some people like some oddly satisfying sounds like hair brushing or cutting. To each their own. 

I recently learned of this phenomenon and thought I would do my part to help people find some peace and relaxation during a difficult time in the world.

DIY BINAURAL MICROPHONE TUTORIAL

If you're wondering what ASMR is - it's a new health trend that allows people an easy way to unwind and get the rest they need, without the use of medication, meditation or even alcohol. And, of course, you can simply google it to find a ton of information but essentially it is a sensory response in the body to certain stimuli that helps a person relax and fall asleep. 

One of the main sources of this stimuli (which is called "triggers") for this response in a person, is sound. So, if you're wanting to become an ASMRtist and you want to make videos on YouTube that will help people relax and calm down so they can get to sleep, you'll need a good microphone. Unfortunately, these binaural microphones can be super expensive - the ones I found ranged from $400 to $9,000. 

And, since I only began making ASMR videos on Halloween for some friends who were having trouble sleeping, I don't have that much money to spend on a new microphone.

So, I thought I'd share a video showing you how my son built me my own binaural microphone for about $100.00 so I could use it in my new ASMR videos.

Holiday Hair - It's a Good Time to Try Something New

The holidays can be stressful even for the most organized of Santa's helpers. 

With presents to buy, cards to write, cookies to bake, cakes to make, packages to mail and so much more to get done before the big day rolls around that we can all feel a little -- or maybe a lot -- pressured to achieve more than we can possibly get done. These year-end expectations can get us wound up too tight to unwind when the clock chimes bedtime. 

So, if you're too tired to even get to sleep, why not try something new to help you relax? 

This new thing I'm talking about is ASMR. 

And ASMR is simply some oddly satisfying sounds that help release a sensory response in your brain that will help you relax and destress so you can sleep. And we all know sleep is important to your health and well-being. So instead of grabbing a glass of wine or taking a sleeping pill, why not try this free method? It really might help you destress and decompress so you can detach yourself from the tension that's keeping you from sleeping.

If you don't know what ASMR is, let me explain:

It's an autonomous sensory meridian response ("ASMR"). This is a sensory response that causes tingles to run down your back, neck and upper spine. It can be created by different stimuli, such as a smell, sight or sound (known as "triggers"). These triggers are specific to individuals. One person can get tingles from the aroma of chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven, another person can be stimulated by the sight of ocean waves and some people get the tingles from sounds of . . . hair brushing. This ASMR can cause a relaxing sensation that helps you calm down and has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia. If you're interested in reading more, check out this link. With the holidays just around the corner, we all might be missing a little sleep. And, sometimes I just want to pull my hair out. It's a chore to work my brush and/or comb through it.

So it isn't always easy to get ready to go out for an evening of fun. First there's the shower to take, then the hair to wash and the makeup and hair styling and that's all before you even begin to get dressed for the occasion. But, I thought if we all got cozy and cuddled up next to a rip-roaring fire, we might be able to destress and relax together.
