MONDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

When I was young we only had one t.v. I know, I know, deprived children that we were. And, more than that, Dad was the one who ran it. Not the kids. But every Friday night Mom would let us watch a movie - it was usually something similar to Animal Planet but back then it was called Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.

And there was always a lion or a crocodile chasing Jim across the field, through the water, or where ever he was heading.

But the big treat of the night - aside from the movie - was popcorn. We all got to have a bowl of popcorn, sometimes even two. And we'd even get to have a glass of pop. My choice back then was Coca-Cola or what we now call Coke.

Those were the simple times.

Today there are so many choices it can seem overwhelming. HBO, Showtime, Disney Channel, and that doesn't even include the other 400 channels offered nightly.

Kids are bombarded with choices today. Some times I wish we could step back in time, to the simpler days. Especially at the holidays when we're all so busy getting ready for that one big day.

What simple memories do you have of growing up and the holidays?

I too came from a one TV home. Not only that, there was only one TV station, so there was no arguing about what was going to be watched.

One of my fondest memories is of a time BEFORE we had a TV. Every Wednesday we went the home of a friend to do our laundry, eat a spaghetti dinner and watch The Flintstones and Gunsmoke. That was the best!

We had one TV and our viewing was limited to a certain amount of time on the weekends.

There were a few exceptions throughout the year: The one night (usually a week night) that our favorite Christmas shows were on, as well as movies like "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music." (This was all before VCRs.)

We kids definitely did not have control of the one tv in our house. My mother would have it on all hours of the day, but aside from cartoons in the morning and the late afternoon--if we were unlucky enough to be home from school during the day--she would force us to sit through hours of boring soap operas!

Needless to say, my brother and I did not watch a lot of tv growing up. :)

One TV, one car, no video games, one radio, and ONE BATHROOM!

TV was an event growing up. It's not anymore--a case of too many, too much.

Same here -- one TV and no remote. And I loved Mutual of Omaha! Watched that all the time. That and Jacques Cousteau.

I remember being able to decorate the tree and house mostly by myself. My brother & sister were older and not into it much, so I got to do most of it.

Yup. One black and white TV. Our Friday nights were just like yours. I loved it. We usually had popcorn, but every now and then Dad would come home with root beer, red creme soda and vanilla ice cream. That was the best!

I had one tv growing up, too, Kim. I also loved when my dad would pop popcorn in the pot with the lid on, then pour melted butter on it. YUM! I remember watching Family Ties together and Dynasty!
Kids are so spoiled today. There was Disney and Nickelodeon and now there are three Disney channels, two nick channels and cartoon network. Too many choices! No wonder kids' attention spans are so short now.
Nora- I love red creme soda!!
