Daylight Savings Time (DST)

Okay, it's fall - time to go back. You know the old saying: "Spring forward, fall back." Right? Well, my son was not quite so familiar with it. We started talking about Daylight Savings Time and why it was started.

The practice began in 1895, and was instigated by George Vernon Hudson.

Some credit Benjamin Franklin with proposing DST because he wrote a letter to France suggesting they get up earlier and use the morning hours to get things done. He is famous for many reasons including his proverb, "Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise".

You can read more about DST here.

Oh thanks for reminding me. Now I know when to call family. We don't have it here in Korea.

For the longest time (like, until about five years ago), I thought that DST was during the winter and had no idea that it was during the summer. Even now, I have to stop and think "Now which one is it again?"

I have to confess, I wish that the government would just leave time alone. :-)

The extra hour only works when the kids don't still wake you up at the same time ;) Though seriously, it did seem like a longer morning.
But one day I'll get that extra hour of sleep!

I completely understand the reasoning behind daylight savings, but I'm with Jen--I think the time should be left alone. I've lived in two states that don't go along with the rest of the country--Hawaii and Arizona--and it was great not having to deal with losing and gaining and hour.

Hubs started reminding me of this a week ago...then he changes all our clocks in the house around 6 p.m. last evening...I still have no clue what time it is...grin...

I think, if put to a vote, DST would end. Who likes it? If you want more daylight, get up earlier! Oh well, it is kinda nice to have daylight until 9pm in the summer...

Check out the pic on my essays blog about DST.
