It is a hybrid cross between a male lion and a female tiger. There is a hormonal hypothesis about this specific genetic combination which speculates that the limiting growth hormone is missing thus creating an accelerated growth phase.

Sad story from where I used to live in California -- a man had a pet liger that got away from his home. Knowing it was against the law to have them, he didn't report it. So when it went around the neighborhoods, it ended up being killed by Fish & Game. All that idiot had to do was say it was his, suck it up like a man, and help them catch the animal. People can be so dumb sometimes.
I was wondering if anyone would remember the Napolean Dynamite comment. Actually, I thought it was a make believe animal until I looked it up and read more about it.
So sad about the one getting killed - when there are so few in the world :(
