Fifty Shades of Grey

I read the first two books: Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker.

I only had to read the first one for my book club but once I got into it, I just kept going. The first page was the hardest part for me to get through. I really didn't like the way the author started out by describing the main character by having her standing in front of a mirror and talking about herself. But...who am I to judge because like I said, when I got past the first page I was okay with the story. I'd never read anything with so much "adult" content...but that didn't bother me, in fact I thought it was interesting...from an educational viewpoint or considering it from a research perspective ;D

Of course, being the Stephen King fan that I am, I was hoping for a little more action--maybe a vampire, werewolf, or zombie to pop out sometime...but--unfortunately--nothing like that happened.

I didn't know much about the books, just what my girlfriends were telling me..."You have to read the book(s)".

But, when my son told me the books were written as fan fiction for the Twilight stories, and once I thought about it, it all began to make sense. Of course Christian Grey is a bit dangerous, overly controlling, charismatic, extremely wealthy and extraordinarily handsome...sound familiar?

Anastasia Steele is a young, inexperienced student...another similarity?

They have an immediate attraction for one another that transcends Christian's unwholesome "hungers".

Christian's mother is a doctor...his younger sister is a vibrant, fun-seeking young woman who he has a special bond with.

It all sounds so familiar...doesn't it?

I thought the first book was better than the second (sort of like Twilight over New Moon) but I'm thinking about reading the third novel...it seems like the action will pick up in that story...at least that's what the ending of the second story leads me to believe. But...I haven't quite made up my mind. It was easy for me to read the first two...I was sitting on airplanes for about two days...and needed something to occupy my mind...besides The Avengers, Prometheus, and J. Edgar . . . but those are a few more blogposts waiting to be written.

Anyone want to comment a little on the third book in the series?

Walking In a Winter Wonderland

Wednesday I went for a Winter Solstice Walk with my sister and a couple of girlfriends. It wasn't quite as peaceful and scenic as I'd pictured.

Maybe the reason was because it was only about 27 degrees outside. But, I’m not complaining…much. After all, it wasn’t raining and that’s one thing Portland is known for. Here in Portland it’s said we don’t tan, we mold and we try to think of rain as liquid sunshine—at least that’s what we call it. We try to keep a positive perspective otherwise we all might go completely crazy because lots of us suffer from SAD. Yes, that is a real syndrome here in the Pacific Northwest: Seasonal Affective Disorder. And we don’t simply suffer in the winter. It’s prevalent in every season here. Why do you think they filmed the Twilight series here? There’s a reason vampiric movies are set in this location: it’s called darkness.

Anyway, we girls met at a local little pub (Goose Hollow Inn) to grab a quick bit and a hot beverage before we headed out for our hiking adventure. We were going to “Learn the "reasons for the seasons" and celebrate the return of the sun!”

Plus we planned on stopping to “listen for owls, coyotes, and other creatures as we hike. We will also be using our night vision and learn how nocturnal animals adapt to low light.”

I had no idea that “using our night vision” meant hiking through the trails without any flashlights . . . at all. We wandered around in the black of night through the trails that were completely draped in darkness (also known as tree-cover).

My sister grabbed the back of my hood and held on for dear life. She said, “Why did you wear black? I can’t even see you and you’re right in front of me.”

The guide said, “Not to worry. Your eyes will adjust in about ten minutes and you’ll be able to see like a nocturnal animal…almost.”

And he was right. After about ten minutes it didn’t feel like I was wandering around in a cave with a blindfold on. And, when we stepped out from beneath the tree cover, we could actually see the stars. It was beautiful.

Our guide sent out a few owl calls into the night sky. We all stood around hoping to hear an answer to his calls. Unfortunately, the only answer we got was when my cell phone went off. I forgot to turn it on silent. It was sooooo embarrassing. I quickly pulled the phone out of my pocket and tried to silence it. Unfortunately, these radical hikers weren’t so happy about the interruption. The guide called out,
“You’re ruining our night vision.”

And it was true. I felt like a mole who popped out of my hole: The light was blinding.

Then hoping to sooth the wild beasts (in our group) after that unpleasant technological faux pas, the guide pulled out some Wintergreen Mints for us all to chew. I was thinking, “The way to a woMan’s heart is through his stomach” but there was more to it than that. It was a science lesson rolled up into that little bitty sugary ring of goodness.

When we bit down on the little ring, it sent out an explosion of light inside our mouths. So, we all took turns chewing and watching.

Later, after I got home, I looked it up to see what the reason was for the sparks flying around inside our mouths and found out that “The light was produced by the wintergreen flavoring. Methyl salicylate, or oil of wintergreen, is fluorescent, meaning it absorbs light of a shorter wavelength and then emits it as light of a longer wavelength. Ultraviolet light has a shorter wavelength than visible light. So when a Wint-O-Green Life Saver is crushed between your teeth, the methyl salicylate molecules absorb the ultraviolet, shorter wavelength light produced by the excited nitrogen, and re-emit it as light of the visible spectrum, specifically as blue light -- thus the blue sparks that jump out of your mouth when you crunch on a Wint-O-Green Life Saver.”

At one point, I heard one of the hikers calling “Phil, Phil…” I turned to see if she was okay and she looked fine so I went on my way.

Later, Phil started calling to his wife. I told him she had been calling him a bit back. He looked concerned. He pulled out his phone and called her. Then, he told us she was fine. She’d just gone off on her own.

Who wanders off in the dark, on pitch black trails at night. . . by themselves?

Obviously some people are more daring than me. I never would have left the group to wander the trails alone. She must have been a little more than mad. . . at her husband.

Anyway, it was a wonderful way to spend a winter night.

At the solstice hike, I learned a little, walked a lot and shared an interesting adventure with my sister and a couple of friends. And, now the days will be getting longer and the nights will become shorter. That is definitely something worth celebrating—especially here in Portland where the planet seems to linger in the darkness a little more than most places.

The Undead Series

Okay, I've always been a fanpire ever since the early days with Dracula but then when Stephen King wrote Salem's Lot, I was really hooked. I've read lots of books and the Twilight series had to join that list. Then there was the TrueBlood line-up and I've just finished the Undead series.

I loved Mary Janice Davidson's wit and humor. I'd be laughing while I was reading and my husband would say, "Isn't that a vampire book?"

I'd say, "Yeah, but it's funny."

He'd look at me like I'd finally lost my mind.

Anyway, I've read 9 or 10 of the books (all 9 in the series plus one little spin-off werewolf 'tail' :) in the Undead series. The last one, though, Undead and Unfinished (HERE'S A SPOILER ALERT)

***********************************************************************************

definitely my least favorite. It had it's moments but the ending... I did not like that. Maybe because I've been happily married for so many years (yeah 27, count 'em - that's a lot of years) and we've had our moments of anger and arguments (of course, anyone who's been married more than a year has), but we've always "made up". So................I didn't like that ending. In fact I didn't like it so much, I doubt I would buy another book in the series...but you never know. I might want to find out what could have caused such a flip in Betsy's paranormal dimension but...maybe not.

I mean I can handle the shallow silliness, the shoes, the 'sucky' parts of the story but when you murder your own husband...I have to draw the line somewhere...right?

And, then, when she skins him and uses his (un)dead body to make a book (literally), I don't know call me squimish...it just didn't seem right to do those sorts of things to your most loved one. And no wonder she went a little crazy whenever she read from that hardback - after all it was her husband's.

Anyone else read the series? What were your thoughts?

Anyway that was a disappointment :(

Movie Review Monday - ECLIPSE

I've read all the books and really enjoyed:

Twilight;
New Moon;and
Eclipse; however . . .
Breaking Dawn was not my favorite - in fact it was one book that wrapped everything up too neatly for my liking.

But Twilight (the movie) I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed the show. New Moon I thought was okay, Eclipse--not so much. It was too much of a romance for my liking. I would have liked to have seen more action--but then I guess I'm not the usual reader of the series.

I did love Jacob in Eclipse. I think he's done a great job. And the werewolves were very cool - or maybe I should say "hot" but once again--it wasn't my fav.

Twilight Tour

(Catherine autographed the above photo for me. You have to look close to see my name, because she didn't want to put it over Robert's face :)

October 31, 2009 was the First Annual Twilight Tour put on by the Portland Movie Tours. They provided cold bottled water with NEW MOON and ECLIPSE candy bars and granola bars so we could munch on our snacks while we read our maps and literature.

On top of that, Young Bella was along for the ride. Catherine Grimme, the friendly little dancer who played young Bella in the Twilight movie autographed photos for all of us on the tour. I even had my picture taken with Catherine and her mom, Kim.

It was a day filled with fun, food and laughter.

A marketing and administrative Manager from the Governor's office of Film and Television was along on the tour. She added some great information to the regular tour.

Have you ever wanted to see Bella and Charlie’s house?

Or what about the spot where Eric and Bella first met. He wanted to interview her but she didn't want that much attention.

One of the best spots, I thought, was the Cullen’s house--it was like a wall of glass.

The Forks High School? Also known as Kalama High.

The shop where the girls bought their prom dresses (I even had to buy a blouse there) or
The Thunderbird and Whale Bookstore?
The Thunderbird and Whale is the book store where Bella went shopping.

We even walked down the alley way, where Bella was followed by her would-be assailants.

We also went by the Bloated Toad Restaurant.

If you went on the tour, what would you want to see?

PRELUDE TO NEW MOON

The fifth of September, we were invited to a Twilight party - a costume party.
My husband went as Dr. Cullen. I was a baseball player from the Vampire Baseball game.
The party started at Twilight and we all had a little vampire venom or a Bloody Bella or two
and for those who didn't want any vampire venom, they could choose between Type A, Type B, or Type O blood to drink (have you ever noticed how much red wine looks like blood?...)
It was a roaring good time. With loads of good food and even a pin the tail on the werewolf game hanging on the wall then Team Jacob/Team Edward Jeopardy,
it was a wonderful weekend party.
With werewolf cupcakes

A fountain dripping with blood chocolate - okay it was only pink but pretty cool

Even the candles were dripping with blood.

All-in-all a heart-wrenching good time was had by all.

It's Officially Black Friday

Today is officially Black Friday. The Day after Thanksgiving is always the biggest shopping day of the year. And my daughter and I will be out in the throng. We will definitely be buying books and a few other things.

But yesterday was Thanksgiving! We have so much to be thankful for. I had all my kids home with me and we had a wonderful day.

First my husband and I got up early and took the dogs for a walk. Then we came home and did some meal prep. After that, Jake, Luke, Kara, MacKenzie, Lars and I all went to the movies. The Boys watched Quantum of Solace, which is the 22nd James Bond film. We, girls, went and watched Twilight. It was the second time for me. But I sure enjoyed it.

We came home and had a wonderful dinner together and my brother, Steve, stopped by for a bit. A very nice evening, a very nice holiday. So much to be thankful for. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday too.

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

I sat down a few weeks ago to watch a show with my husband and daughter, which is a rare occurrence in my house. Usually, I’m reading a book or writing. Anyway, we were watching True Blood on HBO, when I got a little uncomfortable. I mean I turned to my 20 year-old daughter and said, “Can they do that on T.V.?”

She shook her head, like I must be an alien pod person, and said, “It’s HBO.”

I said, “Yeah, but can they do THAT on t.v.?”

She looked at me like I’ve been living in a cave or something and groaned, “Duh. They can do whatever they want.”

So anyway, I’ve been enjoying the series but a friend told me the books are even better. So I ran out to my local Borders and bought Dead Until Dark.

It’s a quick read at 292 pages. And I read the entire book on my airplane ride from North Caroline to Portland, Oregon.

So, you can grab this story and finish it in no time. And, to be honest, I liked the story better in the book than on t.v. Not that the actors aren’t all gorgeous on HBO but Sookie Stackhouse comes across as a smarter character in the book – at least to me. And, Bill Compton seems stronger in the novel than in Hollywood.

This isn’t a Twilight experience even though it has romance and is a vampire novel. It’s more complicated in some ways.

In Dead Until Dark the vampires have “Come Out of the Closet” and are living amongst the humans. They drink synthetic blood – or at least the ones who are “mainstreaming” and trying to live their lives without sucking off the humans around them. Plus, there are more characters with special abilities than were found in Stephanie Meyer’s books. Sam is a shapeshifter and Sookie is a clairvoyant and – I have a feeling – there’s more to it than that.

VB (Vampire Bill) and Sookie seem like star-crossed lovers. They both are unique and drawn to each other. But, VB isn’t all good. He’s got one wicked temper when pushed too far. And, with super human strength, a bad temper is a real BAD thing.

I just bought the second book in the series, Living Dead in Dallas, and I’ll update you all after I read that story.

But, if you like a quick story that keeps you turning the pages, Dead Until Dark is a fun book to pick up. And if you don’t have time for a quick story, you can always turn on the t.v. and watch the HBO show. But, remember, the books are better.
