An Animal Crisis

My niece, Serena, did a post on her school blogsite about the bushmeat crisis. Some of the research is worth reading, and at least buying a t-shirt.

Check it out here: http://www.bushmeat.org/portal/server.pt?open=512&objID=888&mode=2&in_hi_userid=2&cached=true

And here's a photo of my environmentally aware niece, rock wall climbing:

Plastic Bags Are On Their Way Out in Portland, OR

If you'd like to read another article about cutting down on plastic bags, it looks like Portland, Oregon may be going the way of Boston and San Francisco:

Buy Yourself a Carbon Offset

There was a bumper sticker on a car that announced it
had redeemed its carbon footprint by buying a
carbon offset at TerraPass.

I logged on today and it is really easy to plug
in the year, make and model of your car, and
estimate the number of miles you drive a year.
It immediately tells you the number of your
carbon footprint and gives you the
price for a year's offset. Mine was $59.50.

If I buy the offset they will mail me a decal
for my car. The website gives detailed information
about where the money goes, and you can choose
between various options such as wind energy.

Recycle and Reuse to Help Save the Earth

In Portland, Oregon, we Recycle probably more than any city in
this country but, if you visit Denmark, you’d be impressed
with their ability to limit use.

If you’re interested in recycling, and reusing:

Ask the Editor

Wouldn't it be great to be able to ask an editor questions and get the answers immediately? Well here's one place where you can find lots of answers to questions writers posed:

So Little Time

Everything seems to take forever and there's so little time left for writing. Between work, family, friends and the dogs - well... it doesn't leave much time for anything else. Here's me and the girls: Kit and new puppy Sasha.

Update on She Loves Me - She Loves Me NOT

The agent told my friend she didn't have enough photographs for her nonfiction picture book (pb) but she did give her the name of another agent (a referral) and said that agent is more into illustrated pb's - so there's still hope...

Agent Questions - She Loves Me - Not

I have a friend who got an email from an agent asking her to call - any time. I figured, "She's going to offer representation." I mean, isn't that the call we're all waiting to make? So anyway, she makes the call and it's a "NO". I don't get it. My friend is going to call me tonight and tell me what happened in that call. I'll keep you posted.

But BookEnds Agency had some good answers to questions about agents: http://bookendslitagency.blogspot.com/

Shakespeare - To Be-lieve or Not

Editorial Ass questions the truth of Shakespeare writing the stories he has been so famous for, here: http://editorialass.blogspot.com/ but no matter what anyone decides, I choose to believe. How can I not, when I've visited his birthplace and seen his gravesite?

And Hamlet's Castle has a plaque attributing the story to William so what's a simpleminded person to believe. I want to be like Virginia and say "Yes there is a . . .Shakespeare who wrote the tales."

To rewrite history, would create too much chaos and wreck havoc on the people who celebrate him.

Writing-a Lonely Endeavor-Kill 2 Birds with 1 Stone

Writing can be a very lonely endeavor but by joining a critique group, you'll improve your social network and your writing - in effect - killing two birds with one stone.

I joined one group that wanted to meet about once a month and liked it so much I had to join another that meets every other weekend. Here's a picture of the group that meets every other weekend - but we're missing Kerry (who just had her baby, Rowan) and Pam.

New Technology for Writing

Intel has a new mini laptop that only costs about $300. Check it out at this site: http://classmatepc.com/index.htm?iid=hdr_nav+cmpc_home

If you click on Product Info and then features, the girl on the screen is my niece, Serena. She took the laptop for a test drive and thought it was super cool and light weight. It might be worth taking a look at.

Beginning Blog - or - Getting a Life

In the beginning, when I was a kid, I started writing for pleasure. When my kids started heading off to college, my oldest son told me to, “Get a Life.”

I thought how hard can it be? Well, after devoting 23 years to raising kids, it’s not so easy. It’s difficult to change focus and break habits but I’m trying - by writing.
